ArtMadeMeGay collects a letter that has circulated in the art world for years with no name attached to it. It is published here in full, in the form in which it arrived.

The author is a painter. He has asked not to be named on this page, and we have honoured that, for the reason the letter itself gives: a name is a thing that can be looked up, judged, priced, and used to end an argument that should still be going. The argument is the point. The name is not.

The letter has been reproduced from a photocopy of a photocopy, with the worst of the transcription errors repaired and nothing added. Where the text is uncertain, we have said so. Where it is clear, we have left it alone.

The editors are volunteers. Nobody is paid, and nothing here is for sale.
